Well that's a good question. You could say, design is a lot like cooking in a fancy restaurant. It takes team work to get out the best product in the right amount of time (and at the right price). Only with the highest quality ingredients can you achieve the fullest flavour — while using the perfect spices for the finishing touch. In order to make all the ingredients to come together you have to use all of the right tools. Finally, you need to be able to serve the food in the best way possible, presenting it properly to no matter who gets it.
At this point you might be scratching your head, thinking "Are these guys bonkers?".
The Chefs
Our kitchen has two chefs, and each of us has his own field of specialty and background. Similar to a pastry chef and a saucier. One young & one old, one German & one Canadian. This gives us a unique perspective on our projects. Being able to look through the eye's of two very different generations &mdash Baby Boomer & Generation X. Being able to speak and hear from the demographic is very important. We often get in quite heated discussions over projects, but it always gets the best results in the end.
The Ingredients
Our ingredients are our minds and inspirations. We are both educated in graphic design, as well as many years of experience in the field. That is never enough though. We are continually educating ourselves on the changing face of the internet and developing; the latest in technology, programs, and techniques; and also what is going on in many other areas. It is very important to stay relevant and up to date.
The Tools
The tools are the hidden arsenal of the chef, we cook with Apples. We prepare websites and photos and can do many wonderful things with Photoshop. Perfectly drawn lines for logos, stationary, and just about anything with type is brewed in Illustrator. Ads, magazines, brochures, and anything with a layout we blend together in InDesign. Anything that has to move is prepared with care in Flash. When our clients want to add some of their own content to the meal, we use Joomla (a great open source content management system, allowing customers to add and edit content with ease on thier websites). Our favourite tool for webdesign, much like the simple bbq, is plain XHTML and CSS. With these and perhaps a dash of Javascript you can do just about anything. For photography we each shoot with professional cameras, Canon and Olympus.
The Presentation
Atlast we make sure that our finished product is served properly. This means different things depending on the medium. For websites, we ensure pixel perfect design by testing on all of the popular browsers. For print design, we have spent countless hours to find the best printers, for the best quality, with the best prices. |
